Curious about American Mahjong? This beginner-friendly class will take you step-by-step through the basics—from learning the tiles and reading the NMJL card to the Charleston, choosing a hand, and playing the game. No experience necessary! All tiles, racks, and learning materials are provided; just come ready to learn, have fun, and leave feeling confident enough to start playing!
Who it's for
Complete beginners, curious friends, and anyone who has watched Mahjong from the sidelines and wants a friendly place to finally learn. Long-lapsed players are welcome too — it's a great refresher.
What you'll learn
- The tiles: suits, winds, dragons, flowers, and jokers
- How to read and use the current NMJL card
- Setting up the table, racks, and the wall
- The Charleston — passing with purpose
- Choosing a hand and staying flexible
- Exposures, calling tiles, and declaring Mahjong
- Table etiquette and the flow of a full game
Sessions & length
Mahjong 101 is about two hours per session, 2 to 3 sessions are highly recommended so the basics have time to settle in and be built upon during the next sessions.
What to bring
Just yourself. Everything you need is provided. If you already own a current NMJL card, feel free to bring it — otherwise one will be available for you to purchase.
